Milestone achieved! Articles on online advertising, data and consumer protection published (and more accepted for publication)

Exciting news for our project!

Two very important legal articles regarding online advertising have been published in the most recognized peer-reviewed journals in Greece regarding IT law:

  • Contract or consent for online advertising: A meta dilemma in the wake of the Irish DPC decision on Meta, by Dr. Evangelos Margaritis and Vassilis Karkatzounis (Members of Project OBAMA) – available at qualex.gr
  • Regulating Advertising Technologies, by Vassilis Karkatzounis and Prof. Lilian Mitrou (Members of Project OBAMA) – available at qualex.gr

The first article focuses on the highly important topic of the legal basis for online advertising, the paywall models, and its applications in social media like Facebook. The article examines the connections of online behavioral advertising with consumer protection rules and analyze the interplay between data and consumer protection legal regimes.

The second article focuses on advertising outside “walled gardens” and specifically on the heavily scrutinized case of Google’s Real Time Bidding. The article identifies and debates the challenges of using data in the context of the modern online advertising ecosystem from a data protection point of view.

Both articles provide an academically accurate and up to date overview of the legal framework for the two most important pillars of online advertising, namely within major online platforms (social media) and in the open web (RTB).

The articles are the result of extensive legal research from members of the OBAMA team on data protection and consumer protection issues and their participation in top tier international conferences in prominent universities, like King’s College London.

Both articles are in Greek. Articles by the authors have also been accepted for publication in international the past few months and more information will be released when they are officially published.

These articles are the deliverables of Working Package 2 of OBAMA project, which is now successfully completed.

The articles and the related research will be the basis for the next steps: first, the survey on businesses and consumers regarding online advertising, where we aim to detect and analyze the challenges of implementing legal theories in the digital practice; upon conclusion of this step, the final report and guidelines of the project will review the findings of the legal research with the help of insights on the perception of users concerning their rights and of businesses regarding their obligations.

Stay tuned!
