We are excited to announce that our infographic explaining how data collection works and its meaning for consumer protection in clear and plain language is now available online*.
During our research, it has become evident that the legal issues related to online advertising are inextricably intertwined with the (low) users’ awareness.
This infographic intends to address this problem exactly, by making information about online advertising easily accessible, to help users make more informed decisions.
Undeniably, online advertising is a key driver for the digital economy.
Digital ad spending in the EU only amounted to €92 billion in 2021, and the global market size is expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2027.
Advertising is at the core of Big Tech’s business models, but also indispensable for almost any website and e-shop available online.
Services like search engines, social media and news websites are provided “for free” or, more realistically, in exchange for users’ data.
These data have evolved into abundant raw material for highly targeted advertising processes, raising several complex legal issues, related primarily to privacy, data and consumer protection.
The infographic is available here (in Greek and English).
*This infographic is an important milestone for our research project, as it is one of the two deliverables of Working Package 3.
